The Beginning of Affordable Accessible Vehicles

In 1979, Adaptive Mobility Systems, Inc. formerly known as Handicaps Inc. became a player in the mobility industry by selling full size wheelchair vans and related equipment, such as scooter lifts and hand controls. A short time later, we also became a dealer for other lowered floor minivan companies such as Braun and IMS.

By the end of the 90s, visionaries in our company realized cumbersome full size vans, which had been the mainstay of the industry, were poised to be replaced by the minivan. Its ease of driving and parking, along with lower operation costs, were extremely attractive. However, the chassis combined with the conversion cost of approximately $45,000 was prohibitive to many. The mobility industry needed more efficient and affordable accessible vehicles.

Today’s Accessible Vehicles from AMS

With the new millennium came a new owner – and with him over 30 years of automotive experience. His experienced design team immediately set out to build a reasonably priced lowered floor minivan system based on pre-owned Dodge Grand Caravans and Chrysler Town & Country models. The goal was to make a strong, simple, and safe accessible vehicle.

After intensive safety testing, we began production at a rate of about 4 per month. The word spread quickly. When the public learned we offered late model, pre-owned lowered floor accessible vehicles from $20,000-$30,000, and that we could convert their own Dodge Grand Caravan for only $13,900 (a 4-week process), business soared.

Today, our 80,000 square-foot facility, which has achieved National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) assurance, produces nearly 60 accessible vehicles each month – a number that is rapidly rising.

We look forward to providing you with an accessible vehicle that will connect you with your destination. Contact us today with questions or to receive more information about the possibilities we provide.
