CVA, Cerebral Vascular Accident, is the sudden death of some brain cells due to lack of oxygen when the blood flow to the brain is impaired by blockage or rupture of an artery to the brain. A CVA is also referred to as a stroke.
How many people suffer from stroke a year? In the US, about 400,000 people a year suffer from strokes.
After a stroke a patient will need rehabilitation. A caregiver may be needed for the patient at home while recovering. Families and caregivers will have to make adjustments to the home to make the patient comfortable and safe. Approximately half of all stroke patients are able to go home and function without help, while the other half require care.
